Global port congestion approaches 4 million TEUs as peak season extends

Global port congestion is approaching 4 million TEUs as strong container demand, weather disruption and tight vessel capacity continue to pressure major trade lanes, according to DHL Global Forwarding’s latest Ocean Freight Market Update. The logistics company said the global container market remains tight, with the Transpacific peak season continuing longer than expected while congestion limits effective shipping capacity. Peak season continues across the Transpacific DHL said the peak season on the Asia–North America trade began early this year and has continued longer than initially expected. The prolonged demand is being supported by inventory building ahead of the holiday season and China’s upcoming Golden Week, while vessel utilisation on key eastbound services remains close to full capacity. Global container demand is up around 5% year to date, according to DHL, with the Transpacific continuing to show strong demand.
