South Africa have levelled their four-Test series against New Zealand after beating the All Blacks 33–26 in Cape Town. The Springboks responded to their first-Test defeat in Johannesburg with a fast, physical performance at DHL Stadium, taking a 24–14 lead into halftime and holding off New Zealand's second-half challenge. The result leaves the series tied at one win apiece and restores the edge to a rivalry that has already delivered two very different Tests. New Zealand won the opening match 33–16 at Ellis Park, but South Africa answered seven days later with a seven-point victory in Cape Town. For the All Blacks, it is their first defeat of the year and the first loss of Dave Rennie's current tenure. The bigger issue now is how the team responds with two Tests still to come. South Africa's victory was built on pressure and scoreboard control. The hosts struck early, forced New Zealand to chase the game and made enough of their opportunities to prevent the visitors from completing the comeback. A fourth Test follows in Baltimore on 13 September NZ time. That makes the next match pivotal. A win would put either side one victory away from taking the series, while another close contest would increase the pressure heading into the United States finale. The South Africa–New Zealand rivalry has stretched for more than a century, but this four-Test format gives the 2026 contest an old-tour feel rarely seen in the professional era. With the score now 1–1, the series has effectively become a best-of-two battle.
