Millions of Australians will receive higher social security payments from 20 September as the latest indexation changes take effect. The federal government says more than 5.3 million people will benefit from increases across pensions, JobSeeker, Parenting Payment and Commonwealth Rent Assistance. For a single JobSeeker recipient without children, the maximum rate will rise by $16.20 to $833.70 a fortnight. The maximum single pension rate will increase by $36.80 to $1,237.70 a fortnight, while the combined maximum rate for a pensioner couple will rise by $55.60 to $1,866.00. Parenting Payment will also increase. The maximum rate for a single recipient will rise by $20.90 to $1,087.20 a fortnight, while partnered recipients will receive an increase of $14.80 to $763.00 each per fortnight. Renters are also part of the September change. Nearly one million people receiving Commonwealth Rent Assistance are expected to see higher maximum rates and thresholds as part of the regular indexation process. The changes matter because they arrive while households are still dealing with high grocery, housing, insurance and energy costs. The increases will not transform household budgets, but for people relying on income support even a modest fortnightly rise can help with food, transport, medicines or utility bills. The important date is 20 September 2026. Eligible recipients do not normally need to lodge a separate application for standard indexation increases; updated rates are applied through the social security system. Individual payments can still differ because of income, assets, relationship status, supplements and other circumstances. Australia's rapid shift toward electric and hybrid vehicles is pushing road-funding reform from a future policy problem into a current one. Battery-electric vehicles accounted for 21.7 per cent of new vehicle sales in July, with 23,510 sold during the month, according to figures reported by the ABC. That followed a record June and marked the third consecutive month in which roughly one in five new vehicles sold was fully electric. The surge matters for more than the car market. Australian roads have traditionally been funded in part through fuel excise and other charges linked to petrol and diesel use. As more motorists switch to vehicles that use little or no taxable fuel, governments face a growing question: how should the cost of building and maintaining roads be shared fairly across the whole vehicle fleet? A national road-user charging system is increasingly part of that discussion. The basic idea is that motorists would contribute according to road use rather than how much petrol or diesel they buy. Such a model could eventually apply across petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles, although the design, timing, privacy safeguards and treatment of regional drivers would be politically difficult. The issue is particularly relevant in Australia because driving patterns differ enormously. A commuter in inner Melbourne with strong public transport may travel far fewer kilometres than a family or tradesperson in regional Western Australia. Any national system would need to consider those differences rather than simply replacing one blunt charge with another. The EV sales shift has accelerated as fuel-price volatility makes electric running costs more attractive to some households. Falling battery costs, more model choice and home solar are also changing the calculation for buyers. But the transition creates winners and losers. People who can charge at home may reduce weekly fuel costs substantially, while renters, apartment residents and people in regional areas can face higher barriers to reliable charging. A new road charge could also change the savings equation for people considering an EV. Australia already has road-user charging arrangements for heavy vehicles through the fuel-tax system, but a universal distance-based charge for ordinary motorists would be a much broader reform. For consumers, the important point is that no single nationwide charge for all private EV drivers should be treated as settled policy unless and until governments announce the final model. The debate, however, is becoming harder to avoid as electric vehicles take a larger share of new-car sales. The way Australia funds roads was designed around a petrol-dominated vehicle fleet. That fleet is changing quickly. The next challenge is building a system that remains fair to city motorists, regional communities, businesses and people who have already invested in cleaner vehicles.

One Nation has claimed a historic breakthrough in Western Australia after the ABC projected Luke Herdegen to win the Secret Harbour by-election, a result that would give the party its first seat in the WA Legislative Assembly. The outer-southern Perth electorate had been regarded as a very safe Labor seat. It was left vacant after former Labor minister Paul Papalia resigned, and 16 candidates contested Saturday's by-election. The result is politically significant well beyond one electorate. A seat that Labor won comfortably at the 2025 state election has shifted dramatically, providing a fresh warning to the major parties about voter frustration in fast-growing outer-suburban communities. But there is an important qualification. The Western Australian Electoral Commission says election-night figures are indicative only. The full count will not be completed until after the postal-vote deadline at 9am on 3 September, when all eligible postal ballots have been received and preferences can be fully distributed. That distinction matters. Media organisations can project a winner when the available count makes the outcome clear enough, but the Electoral Commission's final declaration is the formal result. Secret Harbour sits between Rockingham and Mandurah and includes many young and working families. Cost-of-living pressure, housing, local services and dissatisfaction with the major parties were prominent themes around the campaign. The scale of the swing will now be studied closely by both state and federal political strategists. For Labor, the loss raises questions about whether support is softening in areas once treated as dependable territory. For One Nation, the result offers momentum and a foothold in a chamber where it has never previously held a lower-house seat. The Liberal Party and the other candidates also shaped the preference flow, but the strongest message from the night is that voters were prepared to move sharply away from the previous result. The next key date is 3 September, when the postal-vote deadline passes and the WA Electoral Commission can move toward the final distribution of preferences.
