The safety paradox of decarbonisation: new fuels, new risks

As shipping accelerates its transition towards lower and zero greenhouse gas fuels, the industry is entering one of the most significant periods of operational change in its history. Methanol, ethanol, ammonia, hydrogen and biofuels all have a role to play in helping shipping meet the ambitions set out in the IMO’s greenhouse gas strategy. Yet while these fuels may reduce emissions, they also introduce new and unfamiliar safety risks that must be carefully understood, managed and regulated. This is the safety paradox of decarbonisation. The very fuels and technologies designed to support shipping’s path to net zero can also create new hazards for vessels, crews, ports and supply chains.
