Vessel delays hit major US container gateways

Container terminals at several major US gateways are facing vessel delays, with waiting times reaching up to 18 hours at Charleston and 12 hours at Los Angeles, according to Hapag-Lloyd’s latest North America operational update. The German carrier’s Week 36 data shows varying levels of congestion across key US ports, while several other gateways continue to operate with little or no vessel waiting time. Charleston records longest waiting times Charleston is seeing some of the most significant delays. At Wando Welch Terminal, vessels can face waiting times of up to six hours for Gemini services and up to 18 hours for non-Gemini vessels. Meanwhile, North Charleston Terminal is currently reporting no waiting time.

Korea Marine Transport Co. (KMTC) has announced a temporary suspension of selected special cargo shipments to Japan during the country’s Silver Week holiday period . The restrictions will apply from 18 to 25 September 2026 . DG, OOG and reefer cargo affected The temporary restrictions cover three categories of special cargo: Dangerous goods (DG) Out-of-gauge cargo (OOG) Reefer cargo (RF) KMTC said restrictions may vary depending on the Japanese port involved. Even at ports where DG, OOG or reefer cargo can normally be handled, shipments may still face restrictions due to factors such as terminal gate closing schedules during the holiday period.

Teesport welcomes 5,000 Chery vehicles

PD Ports has welcomed one of the largest automotive vessel calls to Teesport in recent years, with 5,000 vehicles arriving from China as part of a major UK import operation for Chery Automotive. The shipment includes vehicles from across the Chery portfolio, comprising Jaecoo and Chery models alongside the first 1,300 Lepas plug-in hybrid cars to be imported into the UK market. The vessel call demonstrates Teesport’s capability to handle high-volume automotive imports and reinforces its strategic position as a gateway for vehicle distribution across the north of England and beyond. The port benefits from lock-free access to the North Sea, deep-water berths capable of accommodating large vehicle carriers, established RoRo infrastructure, dedicated storage compounds and 24-hour security coverage from both port security teams and Teesport Harbour Police. Strong road connectivity via the A19 and A1 corridors and key cross-Pennine routes provides effective onward distribution to dealer networks and consumers across the country.
