Victoria’s final month: promises on dental and workers need hard questions

Premier Ben Carroll and Opposition Leader Jess Wilson have launched the final month of campaigning in Victoria with duelling pledges on issues that matter close to home: dental care and workers’ rights. Those are not glamorous lines for a campaign to trade on, nor should they be. They are practical policy areas that can change the texture of everyday life for thousands of Victorians — if the promises translate into delivery. Elections are moments when broad principle meets the ledger. A pledge about dental care speaks directly to ordinary families who face the inconvenience, pain and expense of dental problems. A pledge about workers is about job security, pay fairness and whether work will afford a decent life. Both are issues voters can immediately judge by their own experience. That makes them politically valuable — and politically risky. For voters, the useful test is not the rhetoric but the plausibility. How will the money be found? What legislation or administrative action is required? Which services will be expanded, and over what time line? Will rural and regional communities see the same attention as the metropolitan centres? Campaigns often compress complex policy into punchy headlines; the final month needs to be the time when those shorthand promises are unpacked. Candidates and parties have a responsibility, too, to treat the public as adults. That means publishing credible costings and implementation plans before polling day, and being prepared to be held to account afterward. It also means rejecting the temptation to turn every policy proposal into a wedge for short-term advantage. If an opposition leader or a premier is promising better dental care or better protections for workers, voters should be able to drill down on the mechanics of that promise without being told to ‘wait until later’. Media and community groups have a role to play in forcing those answers. Scrutiny in the final month should not be about scoring political points but about testing whether a promise is deliverable. Local councils, health providers and unions will be watching carefully; they will be the ones who must implement or adapt to policy shifts. Their voices should be central to the public conversation. There is also a broader democratic point. Campaigns that habitually trade in vague pledges damage trust in politics. Australians and Victorians expect competence as well as compassion. They will not be satisfied with good intentions if those intentions collide with uninventoried costs or unrealistic timeframes. This election offers voters the chance to decide which set of values and administrative instincts they prefer. But it also presents an immediate test of the health of our political culture: does a campaign quality as useful debate when it concentrates on policies that touch everyday life? If the answer is yes, the final month can be a corrective to the spectacle that too often dominates politics. If the answer is no, we’ll be left with a list of headlines and, after the results, a long and expensive job of turning them into reality. Victorians deserve more than slogans about dental clinics and workers’ rights. They deserve a clear account of how those promises will be delivered, who will pay for them, and how success will be measured. Parties should treat that demand not as a nuisance but as the essential work of governing.
