Garten Trucking appeal on NLRB order rejected by SCOTUS

The U. S. Supreme Court has rejected the certiorari request of a small Virginia trucking company that had been ordered by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) , and then a federal appellate court, to negotiate with a union seeking to represent the company’s drivers. Without comment, the Supreme Court on Monday–the first day of its term–rejected the request of Gartner Trucking of Covington, Virginia to review the decision from earlier this year handed down by the Fourth Circuit. In that decision, the circuit backed the NLRB ’s order that Gartner negotiate with the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers who have sought to organize the company’s drivers.

Union Pacific CEO ‘99.99%’ confident rail merger will win approval

Union Pacific Chief Executive Jim Vena said he is “99. 99%” confident regulators will approve the railroad’s proposed $85 billion acquisition of Norfolk Southern, arguing that the combination would speed freight deliveries and strengthen rail’s competition with trucking.
