San Pedro Bay Ports propose incentive under zero-emission truck programme

The ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles have released draft guidelines for the proposed Zero-Emission Truck Rewards Incentive Programme, a three-year initiative offering qualifying zero-emission trucks incentives of US$ 60 per terminal visit and up to US$ 36,000 per vehicle annually. The programme forms part of rapid action by the two ports to execute measures committed under their agreement last month with the South Coast Air Quality Management District. ZE-TRIP is designed to make zero-emission trucks more cost-competitive with diesel alternatives, encourage greater utilisation of existing zero-emission trucks and attract more zero-emission vehicles to the market to serve the ports. The programme responds directly to trucker feedback identifying cost as one of the primary barriers to transition. Port of Long Beach CEO Dr Noel Hacegaba described the incentive programme as another tool in the port’s decarbonisation playbook, designed to offset the higher costs of owning and operating zero-emission trucks based on direct input from the trucking community.
