Backing Pasifika rangatahi: promise, partnership — and the hard work ahead

New opportunities are being promised for Pasifika young people across New Zealand through a government partnership intended to help rangatahi gain practical skills, explore future careers and build employment pathways. It is the kind of targeted effort that can make a real difference — provided it is followed through with long‑term commitment and co‑design with the communities it seeks to serve. Pasifika communities are among the fastest growing and youngest in Aotearoa. That demographic vitality is an asset if harnessed well: with the right skills and opportunities, Pasifika rangatahi can drive innovation, fill labour shortages and contribute to strong local economies. Programmes that connect training with genuine career pathways — not simply short courses without clear employer uptake — are more likely to produce sustained results. That conversation should begin with a simple question: what does this actually mean for ordinary Australians? Proponents argue that new domestic gas supplies can stabilise energy markets, supply industry and keep lights on as older coal units retire. Opponents warn that unlocking more fossil fuel production at a time of acute climate pressure risks locking in emissions and undermining investment in cleaner alternatives. Both points have merit, and both deserve to be assessed openly. The Beetaloo project promises jobs and economic activity at a time when regional development is urgently needed. Australians are waking up to the hard truth: energy security and climate responsibility cannot be pitted against one another as if one negates the need for the other. We need both a reliable supply of energy and a credible path to lower emissions. That requires hard, honest choices — and a ledger that shows who pays, who gains and what the long‑term costs will be. Beetaloo’s first flow is a milestone. The proper test will be whether it is managed in a way that leaves the Territory and the nation better off — not just in the short term, but for decades to come.
