Maersk introduces ECS on S5S trade

Maersk will introduce an Emergency Contingency Surcharge on its S5S trade from 10 September 2026. The surcharge will apply to dry container shipments from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to South Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. Emergency Contingency Surcharge Maersk will charge US$1,500 for both 20-foot and 40-foot dry containers. The ECS applies to the following scope: Origins: India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka Destinations: South Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands Cargo: All dry containers Effective date: 10 September 2026 Operational challenges Maersk attributed the surcharge to continued disruption across global shipping networks. The carrier highlighted prolonged voyage deviations, longer transit times, equipment repositioning expenses, capacity constraints and higher operational costs.
