FMCSA restores 30-day HOS relief for truckers during emergencies

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is doubling the length of automatic hours-of-service relief available to truck drivers providing direct assistance during certain regional emergencies. A final rule published Monday restores the automatic exemption period from 14 days to 30 days following a regional emergency declaration by a state governor, a governor’s authorized representative or FMCSA. The rule, which took effect Monday, reverses a change FMCSA made in 2023 that shortened the automatic exemption period from 30 days to 14 days. FMCSA said returning to the longer period should reduce administrative burdens associated with seeking extensions when disaster recovery operations last more than two weeks. The exemption is intended for commercial motor vehicles providing direct assistance in response to a declared emergency and is aimed at restoring essential services and supplies.

Ocean Freight Risk: Late Is Now the Likely Outcome

Matt Anderson breaks down why carrier selection matters more than lane selection right now — and how that decision can drive downstream trucking and spot exposure. This conversation covers the September ocean freight risk outlook, service reliability by carrier, total landed cost, and what shippers should do ahead of peak season across ocean, drayage, truckload and intermodal. #OceanFreight #SupplyChainRisk #FreightWaves Degrading execution and reliability — not capacity — is the defining risk in ocean freight right now, particularly on the Asia-to-North America trade lane, according to WiseTech’s newly launched Ocean Freight Risk Outlook. The report, which incorporates September data, finds that on some lanes, a late delivery is now the most likely outcome, not the exception.
