An Arizona County’s “Housing Hub” Is a Dead End for Many Homeless Families

A 12-year-old child opens the curtains of a hotel room in Tempe, Arizona, where she, her mother and four siblings were staying earlier this year while experiencing homelessness. The room was funded in part by AZ Hugs, which helps families with emergency shelter. A decade ago, nonprofit leaders in Arizona’s most populous county boasted that they had created the Amazon of homeless service systems. Families in crisis would no longer have to contact a dozen agencies in search of shelter or housing. A single system could point them to help.
