State and federal leaders are right to place data centres on the national cabinet agenda — their power hunger is no longer a niche planning question. Premiers are divided over how Australia should meet the rapidly growing energy demands of AI data centres. That division matters: decisions about where these facilities sit, how they are powered and who pays for network upgrades will shape electricity supply, regional economies and the climate footprint of new technology for years to come. Data centres are attractive investment, promising jobs and new high‑value activity. But their voracious demand for electricity creates trade‑offs. Left to eight different state approaches, Australia risks a scramble in which jurisdictions compete with incentives that push costs and environmental risk onto households and local grids. A fragmented response also makes it harder to plan for fuel security and to coordinate transmission and generation investments at the scale required. The national cabinet agenda rightly links the data‑centre debate to fuel security. That connection should orient policy away from short‑term giveaways and toward a durable framework that balances national economic benefits with local impacts. A national approach could set common standards for energy efficiency, grid contributions and timelines for new transmission — and require transparent community consultation before sites are finalised. There is also a fairness dimension. If data centres benefit from cheap or subsidised power while households face rising bills or constrained supply, social tensions will grow. Regional communities must not be left to bear the environmental or infrastructure costs without a fair share of the benefits. Governments should require developers to fund necessary network upgrades, invest in local job training, and contribute to community programs where the projects locate. National coordination can also protect strategic interests. The opportunity to host AI training and related industries is real, but so too are national security and resilience concerns tied to concentrated industrial power use. A consistent national policy will give investors clarity while letting governments assess long‑term energy mix, storage and emergency response needs. Finally, this debate should not be siloed. National cabinet is already discussing domestic violence and gun laws alongside energy and data centres — a reminder that technological change plays out across many policy fronts. Ministers must ensure energy policy for data infrastructure does not crowd out urgent social spending or weaken commitments to emissions reductions. The test for leaders is simple: will they stitch together a national strategy that secures energy supply, protects communities and demands accountability from industry — or will they let competition between states produce chaotic outcomes that leave ordinary people to pick up the bill? The right answer is a clear, transparent national framework that treats data centres as part of the country’s critical infrastructure and balances private gain with public interest.

Where data centres are built and how they are powered will affect local electricity supply, household bills and whether communities share in the gains or bear the costs, a choice now being debated by premiers at national cabinet.
