Hambantota Port clarifies vehicle storage policy as RORO volumes grow

Hambantota International Port Group has clarified its vehicle storage policy following recent media reports about vehicles remaining at the port for extended periods. Hambantota Port currently accommodates more than 50,000 vehicles, including transshipment cargo and local imports. According to HIPG, 1,278 locally imported vehicles have remained in the port yard for more than three months. Of these, 581 have been stored at the port for more than one year. Legacy import restrictions affect vehicle clearance HIPG said around 400 of the 581 vehicles were imported before Sri Lanka resumed vehicle imports in 2025.
