Port Freeport awarded federal grant to modernise bulk rice operations

Port Freeport has received a US$ 9,412,500 grant through the US Maritime Administration’s Port Infrastructure Development Program to modernise its bulk rice-handling facilities and the infrastructure supporting agricultural cargo. The funding will pay for replacing a 25-year-old bulk rice loader, installing a new rack system inside the existing rice storage shed, and relocating the shed’s southern wall to open up more berthing space. Together, these works are intended to replace ageing infrastructure, improve cargo handling and support more efficient vessel operations. The award is part of a federal investment of nearly US$ 498 million announced by Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy, covering 35 port infrastructure projects across 19 states.
