Cybersecurity portal to fight bad guys open for business: NMFTA

Long Beach, California–Numerous speakers at the cybersecurity conference of the National Motor Freight Traffic Association here talked about the need for cooperation to fight cybercrooks. That same theme was heard a year ago at the 2025 version of the NMFTA’s conference. The discussion last year led to action: the creation of the NMFTA’s Threat Report Portal, where companies that are either victims of a cybersecurity breach or who saw one coming and fought it off can share their experiences…anonymously. Ben Wilkens is the director of cybersecurity at NMFTA and steered the launch of the portal in May. That was a soft start, but the portal is now fully operational.

Oklahoma Oil Company Plugs Disposal Well That Posed Threat to City’s Drinking Water

The Flying Monkey disposal well in Enid, Oklahoma. Last year, the city asked the state to revoke the Flying Monkey’s permit to operate. September Dawn Bottoms for ProPublica An Oklahoma oil and gas company plugged a well that disposes of oil production’s toxic byproduct after an investigation by The Frontier and ProPublica revealed that regulators had approved the well in violation of state rules meant to protect public groundwater supplies. The disposal well, named the Flying Monkey, injected oil field wastewater underground and sat roughly a quarter-mile from two municipal groundwater supply sites that served the small city of Enid in northwest Oklahoma. Wastewater injection operations are banned within a half-mile of public water wells unless regulators hold a hearing to ensure that this activity will not pollute groundwater.

A huge rise in Colombia’s ecommerce imports are putting pressure on inbound air cargo capacity, with airlines and operators reporting thousands of tonnes arriving each week and demand for space continuing to grow. “Colombia is absolutely booming,” said one airfreight wholesaler that specialises in perishables. “It’s incredible the amount of business going into Colombia.” The wholesaler estimated weekly ecommerce imports at 3,000 to 4,000 tonnes – a figure supported by LATAM Cargo’s ... South Africa’s port reform takes an important step forward

One battle doesn’t win a war, but just getting to a stage where South Africa’s port system can now be reformed is an achievement by itself. The decision of South Africa’s government to formally endorse the separation of Transnet National Port Authority (TNPA), the country’s de facto port landlord, from the Transnet rail operations is a step in the right direction – one that its shippers, forwarders, and other supply chain ... CH Robinson losing the headline war – the plaintiffs’ bar has noticed

Recap: on September 23, six family-owned trucking companies filed a RICO complaint (here’s my previous analysis) against CH Robinson and Total Quality Logistics in the Eastern District of Texas. Among them were Stevens Trucking, Western Flyer Express and Freymiller. The complaint alleges wire fraud, forced labor and a scheme to route freight through chameleon carriers that undercut compliant fleets. Within a week FreightWaves, Land Line, CDLLife and Law360 had all ... The post CH Robinson losing the headline war – the plaintiffs’ bar has noticed appeared first on The Loadstar .

When a truck derails a train, who pays?

In case you missed it: two Norfolk Southern derailments in Alabama on 1 October began with road vehicles at crossings, and because nothing toxic leaked, almost nobody outside the state noticed. The grade crossing liability bill is another matter, because the federal insurance floor for the truck has not moved since 1985. At about 2:16 p. m. on Thursday 1 October, a northbound Norfolk Southern train hit a commercial tractor-trailer at a ...
