Ministers must ensure energy policy for data infrastructure does not crowd out urgent social spending or weaken commitments to emissions reductions. The test for leaders is simple: will they stitch together a national strategy that secures energy supply, protects communities and demands accountability from industry — or will they let competition between states produce chaotic outcomes that leave ordinary people to pick up the bill? The right answer is a clear, transparent national framework that treats data centres as part of the country’s critical infrastructure and balances private gain with public interest.
