Container ship fleet set to grow 9% in 2027 as supply pressure mounts

The container shipping market could face increasing supply pressure in 2027 as fleet growth accelerates and new vessel deliveries continue to enter the market, according to BIMCO’s latest Container Shipping Market Overview & Outlook. BIMCO published its September 2026 outlook on 23 September under the headline “Supply pressure is mounting.” The organisation expects container fleet capacity to grow by 4. 6% in 2026 before accelerating to 9% in 2027. The outlook comes as the global container fleet has already reached around 34 million TEUs.

Area’s second-most intense hurricane on record being fuelled by exceptionally warm Pacific waters Hurricane Polo is barreling towards the Baja California region of Mexico, the latest system in a Pacific hurricane season that has been notably active in recent months. On 22 September, a measurement of 892 millibars was registered for Hurricane Polo, making it the second-most intense hurricane on record in the east Pacific. It is fuelled by exceptionally warm waters across the Pacific Ocean, providing favourable conditions for the system to maintain its considerable strength. Polo is expected to turn towards the west-north-west, before taking a more north-westerly trajectory on Saturday. It has maximum sustained winds of around 150mph, with even stronger gusts occurring within the most intense parts of the hurricane.
