CMA CGM, Nike and Gemadept officially launch electric barge in Vietnam

CMA CGM, Nike and Vietnamese port operator Gemadept have officially launched a fully electric container barge solution in Vietnam, connecting inland cargo operations with the Gemalink deep-sea terminal in Cai Mep. The electric barge will operate on a 180-kilometre round trip between Nike’s inland drop-off location in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly part of Binh Duong province, and the Gemalink terminal. According to CMA CGM, the vessel is designed to transport more than 50,000 TEUs annually. The service is expected to avoid approximately 778 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year while producing no direct greenhouse gas emissions during operation. Electric barge connects inland transport with renewable energy The project combines battery-powered inland transportation with dedicated charging infrastructure and renewable electricity generated through a solar farm at the Gemalink terminal.
