China opens Pinglu Canal, carving a new southwest route to the sea

China has opened the 134. 2 km Pinglu Canal, creating a new river-to-sea artery from the country’s southwest directly to the Beibu Gulf and potentially redrawing inland freight flows towards Southeast Asia. Built at a cost of around RMB72. 7bn ($10. 2bn), the canal runs from Pingtangjiangkou near Nanning, south through Qinzhou and into the Beibu Gulf.
