Hyster has delivered the United Kingdom’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered ReachStacker to the Port of Tilbury, marking a significant milestone in the decarbonisation of heavy port cargo handling equipment. The machine, a Hyster RS46-36CH, is operating at Tilbury2, the port’s logistics and distribution hub, in a deployment supported by Innovate UK funding through the ZEHIA project, which brings together a consortium of partners working to advance zero-emission heavy industrial applications. The ReachStacker is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system supplied by Advent Technologies, delivering equivalent performance to a diesel unit while producing zero direct emissions at the point of use. It is refuelled using green hydrogen produced on-site at the Port of Tilbury by GeoPura, making the deployment part of an integrated green hydrogen ecosystem at the port rather than an isolated equipment trial. The machine is capable of handling containers up to 36 tonnes and stacking up to five containers high, demonstrating that hydrogen fuel cell technology can meet the demanding duty cycles and load requirements of real port operations without compromising productivity.
