Severe rainfall and flood warnings issued for central Greece and western Turkey

Turkey has been hit by powerful thunderstorms and a fatal tornado this week with more heavy rain expected Heavy rain and strong winds will continue to affect parts of south-eastern Europe and Turkey over the next few days, as an area of low pressure in the region has allowed for the formation of powerful thunderstorms. During a particularly intense thunderstorm in Antalya, a coastal city in the south-west of Turkey, the formation of a tornado resulted in the deaths of four construction workers on Tuesday. Authorities in Greece and Turkey have released severe rainfall and flooding warnings, as a further 100-150mm (nearly 4-6in) of rain is expected this week in central Greece and western parts of Turkey, with locally higher totals possible. Travelling eastwards towards south Asia, strong winds and heavy rainfall have swept across the Indian regions of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh as Cyclone Arnab made landfall. With wind gusts in excess of 85mph (140km/h) and rainfall totals in some regions exceeding 200mm, the severe storm has prompted mass evacuations of more than 180,000 people, as well as widespread disruption to energy and transport infrastructure.

250 watchmen, one picket line and half of America’s busiest port complex

A threatened Sunday walkout at Los Angeles and Long Beach may be delayed until Wednesday. The real danger is the reach of a small union local, with 35,688 containers already waiting for rail service. It takes a special kind of labor dispute to put half a port complex at risk with a workforce smaller than the guest list at a medium-sized wedding. At Los Angeles and Long Beach, some 250 security ... The post 250 watchmen, one picket line and half of America’s busiest port complex appeared first on The Loadstar .

XPO beats FedEx Freight & Old Dominion on volume growth – yet the bulls want more

Third-quarter update: XPO grew shipments almost 6% while Old Dominion and FedEx Freight shipped less, and its margins held up far better than the season usually allows, but its headline price growth slowed to 3. 6%. Management puts that down to heavier, shorter-haul freight spilling over from a squeezed truckload market and says October pricing is already up 5%; the banks agree on the momentum and split on whether a stock ... How a Secret Vote by U.N. Scientists Legitimized Carbon Capture and Skewed Decades of Climate Policy

Illustration by Chris W. Kim for ProPublica From the series Carbon Captured: How the fossil fuel industry influence climate research , an investigation from ProPublica and Drilled In the spring of 2005, the United Nations convened more than 100 of the world’s top scientists in the medieval town of Oviedo, Spain. They were there to finish writing a paradigm-shifting report about a technology that they hoped could help stop climate change. To celebrate the report’s impending completion, the meeting’s hosts handed out bottles of cava, Spanish sparkling wine, with tongue-in-cheek labels stating that they were to be opened only by those who truly believed it could work. Belief was necessary because the technology — carbon capture and storage, or CCS — had barely been tested.
