But where absence is the norm, organisers must ensure direct lines from testimony to policy owners — documented commitments, timetables and reporting back to the community. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities deserve more than symbolic listening; they need concrete, accountable steps to address hate, violence and systemic discrimination. If the inquiry is to matter, it must be judged by what changes for those who gave evidence. That means an immediate published plan showing who is responsible for recommendations, how victims will be supported, and how future hearings will be structured to guarantee decision‑maker engagement. Ordinary Australians should be able to see that testimony becomes action, not just headlines. An inquiry can be the start of healing and reform, but only if those in power choose to show up — literally and politically. Empty chairs cannot be allowed to become the final image of this national effort.

Public confidence in aviation depends on a functioning system: enough trained people at the right places, clear reporting lines, and timely transparency from the bodies that run the skies and the airports. The facts now in the public domain are simple and troubling. After weeks of shortages, delays and near misses, pressure is mounting on Air Services Australia. Aviation exposes the cost of broken promises in real time. Near‑misses do not simply inconvenience commuters; they expose families and workers to unacceptable risk. Fixing this will take resources and attention, but the alternative — treating near‑misses as a normal part of travel — is a gamble no community should accept. Air Services Australia must be made to answer clearly and quickly. State and federal transport ministers should insist on an independent audit and publish its findings and recommendations without delay. The aviation system must be both professional and visible in the steps it takes to protect the travelling public. Ordinary Australians will not tolerate safety being squeezed by understaffing and delayed fixes; they should not be asked to.
